A Direct Express Card is a prepaid debit card that lets you access your federal benefits. It is free to apply for and can be used wherever MasterCard is accepted. It has a PIN, so you can use it online or in stores to make purchases. 

How Long Does It Take to Receive a Replacement Card?

The time it takes to receive your replacement card depends on where you live. Typically, it takes 10 business days to receive your replacement card in the mail. If it has been more than 10 business days since you requested your replacement card, you can call Customer Service at the number on your card to inquire about the status of your card. 

Is my Card Safe?

Your Direct Express Card is protected by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). It is also protected by a chip on the card that protects it from fraud. If you suspect your card may have been stolen, contact the Customer Service department immediately at the number on your card. 

How Can I Check My Balance?

You can check your balance for free by calling the toll-free customer service number on your card, visiting the website, or downloading the Direct Express Mobile App. However, if you prefer monthly paper statements, there is a fee of 75 cents each month. 

What are the Restrictions on My Direct Express Card?

You are not allowed to pay for gas with your Direct Express Card. If you use your card to rent a car or hotel room, the rental agency places a hold on up to $500 of your balance and releases it when you return the vehicle or room. 

Can I Buy Money Orders with My Card?

You can buy money orders with your card at the U.S. Post Office and at many other locations that accept Debit MasterCard(r). You will only pay the post office fee to purchase a money order, not a fee to your Direct Express card for the money order. 

What if I lose my Direct Express Card?

You must report the loss of your card to the Customer Service department at the number on your card within 24 hours. Please include your card account number, your name, and the date of loss. You should also include your Social Security or Supplemental Security Income number to confirm you are the account holder. 

Is my Social Security or Supplemental Security Income Benefit Secure?

Your Social Security or Supplemental Security Income Benefit is protected from loss, theft, and unauthorized use by the federal government. Your Social Security or Supplemental Security Income Benefit will be automatically deposited to your Direct Express card on payment day every month.
